Nancy Creaghead, PhD, CCC-SLP, president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association (ASHA), recently appeared before the House Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee in connection with federal funding. Dr. Creaghead asked for $23 million for the Early Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program and conveyed that sponsorship is essential to the development of screening, diagnosis, tracking, intervention, and research programs throughout the U.S.

Additional financial assistance for Parts C and D of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Early Intervention Services for Infants and Families and Personnel Preparation programs was addressed, as well. Dr. Creaghead requested a 12 percent increase to provide successful early intervention services and reduce shortages of qualified special education personnel for children with hearing loss.
