Speech Language Pathologists: EHDI Programs and IDEA Hinge on Congressional
Backing

Nancy Creaghead, PhD, CCC-SLP, president of the American Speech-Language-Hearing
Association (ASHA), recently appeared before the House Labor, Health and
Human Services, and Education Appropriations Subcommittee in connection
with federal funding. Dr. Creaghead asked for $23 million for the Early
Hearing Detection and Intervention (EHDI) program and conveyed that sponsorship
is essential to the development of screening, diagnosis, tracking, intervention,
and research programs throughout the U.S. Additional financial assistance for Parts C and D of the Individuals
with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) Early Intervention Services
for Infants and Families and Personnel Preparation programs was addressed,
as well. Dr. Creaghead requested a 12 percent increase to provide successful
early intervention services and reduce shortages of qualified special education
